“My Mom Will Drop Us Off, If Your Dad Will Pick Us Up, Growing up in the ‘Live Music Capital of The World’”

I went to a lot more shows than I did galleries and museums growing up raised on a diet of southern hip hop and hardcore punk.

Emo’s was a venue in downtown Austin, TX on 6th Street and Red River founded in 1992 and open until 2011. It was my Met, MOMA, and CBGBs.

This angle is the Red River entrance. The inside room could hold about 200 people; the larger room in the back fit another 1000. My first show here was Blood Brothers. I met Gerard Way one year during SXSW. I shot my shot at Mischa Barton there, and met plenty of people there that will scroll right past this post.

The wave of tech and venture capital cash washed Emo’s away from Austin’s face, leaving only high property value, but it was a taco of paradise stacked high with sound that appealed to the brown Donald Judd in me.

My work shows the impact of that live music scene on my life growing up in my little North Austin town post-9/11. Moments like this never last, or so they say.”
